Anne of Green Gables is an intimate and inspiring classic novel written by the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1908 and indeed a comfort book of mine. When Anne Shirley arrives in quiet Avonlea, she takes everyone by surprise Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old orphan with bright red hair braids arrives in the heart of Prince Edward Island. Matthew and Anne were coming back from the station, Anne shows her talkative nature by having a conversation with the shy Matthew. As they were going, there was a little grey house peering around a white apple orchard on a slope beyond and, although it was not yet quite dark, a light was shining from one of its windows. That’s Barry’s Pond,’ said Matthew. “Oh, I don’t like that name either, aid Anne, I shall call it the Lake of Shining Waters.” They drove up the hill and into the long lane of Green gables. The Cuthbert’s yard was quite dark as they turned into it and the poplar leaves were rustling silkily all around it. “ Listen to the trees talking in their sleep,’ she whispered, as he lifted her to the ground.” What nice dreams they must have!’ then, holding tightly to the carpet-bag which contained “ all her worldly goods”, she followed him only to discover that Matthew and his sister Marilla wanted a boy to work on the farm and not a girl. Matthew prevails on Marilla, to let Anne stay with them and soo

n their relationship gradually develops between each other which is quite fascinating and hilarious too. But not everything about Anne is blissful as she has two rivals or nemesis, the hypercritical Mrs Rachel Lynde and Gilbert Blythe who insults Anne by calling her “carrots”. Anne is sensitive about her looks especially her bright red hair. Anne has many misadventures such as accidentally dyeing her hair green or accidentally giving her bosom friend Diana Barry currant wine instead of raspberry cordial. Throughout the book, Anne matures and later does not go to college, since Marilla is turning blind. At the end of the book,

She says, “It’s a million times nicer to be Anne of Green Gables than Anne of nowhere in particular.”

There are two things that you could learn from this book :

  1. Your imagination is your most valuable possession: Anne is full of vivid imagination. The way she sees the world is different from what you and I see. She makes it unique and her imagination helps her in the dark moments. Her imagination has given us the Lake of the Shining Water and the Haunted Woods.

  2. Learn to Love the things that make you unique: Anne has bright red hair and freckles, but aren't these the things that make Anne unique and helps her stand out from other? Learning to love yourself is the greatest value in the world

Thank you!
